Error estimators and their analysis for CG, Bi-CG and GMRES

We present an analysis of the uncertainty in the convergence of iterative linear solvers when using relative residue as a stopping criterion, and the resulting over/under computation for a given tolerance in error. This shows that error estimation is indispensable for efficient and accurate solution of moderate to high conditioned linear systems ($\kappa>100$), where $\kappa$ is the condition number of the matrix. An $\mathcal{O}(1)$ error estimator for iterations of the CG (Conjugate Gradient) algorithm was proposed more than two decades ago. Recently, an $\mathcal{O}(k^2)$ error estimator was described for the GMRES (Generalized Minimal Residual) algorithm which allows for non-symmetric linear systems as well, where $k$ is the iteration number. We suggest a minor modification in this GMRES error estimation for increased stability. In this work, we also propose an $\mathcal{O}(n)$ error estimator for A-norm and $l_{2}$ norm of the error vector in Bi-CG (Bi-Conjugate Gradient) algorithm. The robust performance of these estimates as a stopping criterion results in increased savings and accuracy in computation, as condition number and size of problems increase

Poster Abstract: Bits and Watts: Improving energy disaggregation performance using power line communication modems

Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) or energy disaggregation, aims to disaggregate a household's electricity consumption into constituent appliances. More than three decades of work in NILM has resulted in the development of several novel algorithmic approaches. However, despite these advancements, two core challenges still exist: i) disaggregating low power consumption appliances and ii) distinguishing between multiple instances of similar appliances. These challenges are becoming increasingly important due to an increasing number of appliances and increased usage of electronics in homes. Previous approaches have attempted to solve these problems using expensive hardware involving high sampling rates better suited to laboratory settings, or using additional number of sensors, limiting the ease of deployment. In this work, we explore using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) power line communication (PLC) modems as an inexpensive and easy to deploy alternative solution to these problems. We use the reduction in bandwidth between two PLC modems, caused due to the change in PLC modulation scheme when different appliances are operated as a signature for an appliance. Since the noise generated in the powerline is dependent both on type and location of an appliance, we believe that our technique based on PLC modems can be a promising addition for solving NILM

PHARMACOGNOSTIC AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ASPECT OF BACOPA MONNIERI - A REVIEW

It is said that the use of Bacopa monnieri for memory enhancement goes back 3000 years or more in India, when it was cited for its medicinal properties, especially the memory enhancing capacity, in the Vedic texts "Athar-Ved Samhila" (3:1) of 800 B.C. and in Ayurveda. In the folklore of Indian medicine, several herbs have been used traditionally as brain or nerve tonics. One of the most popular of these neurotonics is Bacopa monnieri, a well known memory booster. Brahmi has been administered at religious institutions to help students to enhance their memory for learning ancient, religious hymns.It is also used as cardio-tonic, tranquilizer and sedative, improves process of learning, Restores memory, enhances power of speech and imagination, diuretic and nervine tonic, anti stress, for nervous and mental strain, use in insanity, epilepsy, hysteria, aesthenia, nervous breakdown. It is a small, creeping succulent herb. The leaf and flower bearing stems are 10- 30 cm long and arise from creeping stems that form roots at the nodes with pale blue or pinkish white flowers belonging to  Family  Scrophulariaceae grown nearly banks of freshwater streams and ponds, paddy fields and other damp places. Knowledge, attitude and practice of biomedical waste management among health care personnel in a teaching institution in Haryana, India

Background: The amount of biomedical waste being generated in our country is increasing day by day. Biomedical waste if not handled properly can pollute the environment and can spread many harmful diseases. Health care workers in our country are still not fully aware about proper BMW handling and disposal, despite increasing global awareness on it. The objective of the study was to understand the level of awareness regarding BMW handling and disposal among health care professionals in our institution.Methods: After taking written informed consent doctors, nurses, lab technicians and class IV employees working in our institution were included. A pre designed questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analysed using SPSS software and results were interpreted into percentages.Results: 305 participants took part in the study. Doctors, nurses and lab technicians had good knowledge, attitude and practice regarding biomedical waste management but there was scope of improvement in certain areas. Knowledge, attitude and practices regarding biomedical waste management of class IV employees were found to be very low.Conclusions: There should be a continuous training programme for all health personnel with special focus on sanitary staff. Biomedical waste management rules should be strictly implemented at all levels

The results show that the industry has recorded a robust growth during this time period and has created great opportunities for investment. Further, the research compares India with four other leading developing countries (Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa) during 2006-07 and concludes that India is one of the fastest rising stars among all these major emerging economies with its economic growth rate running at over 9% annually.(Economic Times, Feb 2007). In order to tap the true potential of the economy, the Indian Government and financial community need to be pro-active in promoting the country as a safe destination for foreign capital, while at the same time ensuring that the vital interests of the economy are not adversely affected

Urologic manifestations of inflammatory pseudotumor: Report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

We report two adult patients with varied urologic symptoms who were found to have inflammatory pseudotumor on histopathology. The first patient had a large, solid, enhancing retroperitoneal mass lesion and presented with increased frequency of urination and recurrent urinary tract infections. The second patient had an obstructing left distal ureteric stricture and presented with painless hematuria. Though preoperative radiological diagnosis of this entity is not feasible, the present article illustrates the imaging findings in this unusual disease entity with review of the relevant literature

Schools as opportunity for oral health promotion: Existing status in India

Childhood is a significant stage in people’s lives where they are more receptive toward behavior shaping; thus, schools have been considered important foundation in addressing the health and social issues. School oral health education programs have produced affirmative results in improving the overall health of the child. The aim of the current review was to explore the history of school health, models of school health and existing efforts of School Oral Health Programs (SOHP) in India. The review identified five existing SOHP (Indian Dental Association - Colgate’s “Young India” Bright Smiles, Bright Futures, Chacha Nehru Sehat Yojna - School health scheme [Government of Delhi], Neev - SOHP, Intensive Dental Health Care Program - Punjab, Trinity CareFoundation - Bengaluru, National Oral Health Program, AIIMS) which is either running or proposed. It is recommended that the upcoming SOHP should be crafted on the existing evidence-based guidelines and theoretical models of school health. Prompt execution of proposed programs should be the priority to target the optimum oral health of the children.&nbsp
